Workplace Diversity

Commerce Bancshares values diversity. We seek employees who are committed to preserving and enhancing our core values and business practices. There shall be no barriers in employment or development in our company because of a person's gender, race, age, sexual orientation/preference, national origin or disability. We support employees in their efforts to excel and reach their full potential and will commit both time and resources to enable them to do so. We believe that our business results are enhanced through engaging and developing our people. Our commitment to diversity extends to each employee, customer, business partner and community in which we live and work.

Our posture regarding Equal Employment Opportunity is clearly stated in our Employee Handbook

Commerce believes that every individual should have the opportunity to work at a job for which he or she qualifies. Our objective is to make every good faith effort to provide equal employment opportunities in all job categories to individuals who are qualified for and/or trainable for a position based on job-related qualifications such as education, training, or experience. This applies to all individuals, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, gender, pregnancy, sexual orientation/preference or other statuses protected by applicable law, as well as to disabled veterans and veterans of the Vietnam Era. Our policy applies to all aspects of employment including recruiting, advertising, hiring, placement, promotions, transfers, compensation, benefits, training, education, social and recreational activities, and terminations.

We strive to provide a work climate of integrity where respect is given to each individual and to provide an environment free of harassment based on any protected status, including race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age disability, gender, pregnancy or veteran status, and/or any other status protected by law. Behaviors such as the following are not conditions of employment which must be tolerated and are not condoned: unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature; racial or ethnic jokes and slurs; or any verbal or physical conduct which denigrates or shows hostility or aversion to an individual based on a protected status.

Preventing discrimination is the responsibility of every Commerce employee. This excerpt from our Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Harassment policy statement, also included in our Employee Handbook, underscores our expectations:

"At Commerce, we recognize our obligations to ensure that Commerce employees are not subjected to unlawful discrimination and/or harassment in any term or condition of employment on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, gender, age, religion, disability, pregnancy status, sexual orientation/preference, veteran status, or other status protected by law. Further, the goal at Commerce is to ensure that conduct never reaches the level of "unlawful" behavior. Accordingly, Commerce prohibits conduct that is inconsistent with our values whether or not that conduct violates the law."

Commerce was honored in 2010 by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) with a nomination for the Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Among the objectives of ESGR is to promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees.
