COMMERCE BANCSHARES, INC. PROMOTES MICHAEL BUDE TO TREASURER

St. Louis, MO – March 28, 2007 — Commerce Bancshares, Inc. announced today the promotion of Michael Bude to Treasurer. Bude has been with Commerce since 1998 and has served as the Interest Rate Risk manager. In his new position, Bude will have primary responsibility for interest rate risk management, capital management, and liquidity management for Commerce.

“Mike’s experience in interest rate risk management and the corporate treasury area has been a valuable asset for Commerce and makes him an excellent choice for his new role as treasurer,” said Bayard Clark, CFO of Commerce Bancshares, Inc., when making the announcement today.

Before joining Commerce, Bude was Senior Asset and Liability Analyst at Mercantile Bank, and he was Cash Manager and Asset and Liability Analyst at Boatmen’s Bank. Bude also serves as a council member and properties manager at Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves.

Bude holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, and a master of Business Administration degree (MBA) from Washington University in St. Louis.
