(Kansas City, MO, October 30, 2009) – Commerce Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBSH) announced today that its Board of Directors approved a 5 percent stock dividend payable on December 15, 2009 to shareholders of record at the close of business on November 30, 2009. Shares issued as a result of the stock dividend will be entered by Direct Registration System on the records of the Company’s transfer agent, Computershare, and statements reflecting the issuance will be mailed on December 15, 2009. No fractional shares will be issued and shareholders will receive cash for such fractional interests based on the market value of the stock on the record date.

One of the first banks in the area to offer an instant issue, unembossed Visa® Check Card, Commerce Bank designed the program to give customers their personalized instant issue debit card the same day they open a new checking account with the bank. The card is immediately usable at ATM machines, stores and businesses. Commerce Bank is offering the card in 100 branches initially.
(Kansas City, MO – October 14, 2009 ) – Commerce Bancshares, Inc. announced earnings of $.66 per share for the quarter ended September 30, 2009 compared to $.48 per share in the previous quarter and $.32 per share in the third quarter of 2008. Net income for the third quarter amounted to $51.6 million compared to $37.0 million in the previous quarter and $24.7 million in the same period last year. During the third quarter of 2008, the Company recorded a loss on the purchase of auction rate securities totaling approximately $21 million after tax, or $.27 per share. For the quarter, the return on average assets totaled 1.16% and the return on average equity was 11.5%.

(Kansas City, MO – July 16, 2009) – Commerce Bancshares, Inc. announced earnings of $.48 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 compared to $.40 per share in the previous quarter and $.74 per share in the second quarter of 2008. Net income for the second quarter amounted to $37.0 million compared to $30.8 million in the previous quarter and $56.0 million in the same period last year. For the quarter, the return on average assets totaled .84% and the return on average equity was 8.9%. During the quarter, the ratio of tangible common equity to total assets increased from 8.2% to 8.9%.

Estell, who brings twenty six years of experience to his new role of Commerce Bank director of public finance. Kim (age 48) to chief financial officer (CFO) effective July 1, 2009. As part of the overall succession planning process, current CFO, A. Bayard Clark (age 63), announced his plans to retire in January 2010. He will relinquish his position as CFO effective July 1, 2009 and will continue as an officer of the company in an advisory capacity until his retirement date.

(Kansas City, MO – April 14, 2009) – Commerce Bancshares, Inc. announced earnings of $.40 per share for the three months ended March 31, 2009 compared to $.84 per share in the first quarter of 2008. Net income for the first quarter amounted to $30.8 million compared to $64.2 million in the same period last year. The first quarter last year included a $22.2 million pre-tax cash gain on the sale of VISA Inc. (VISA) stock and the reversal of certain VISA litigation charges totaling $8.8 million pre-tax, which had the effect of increasing earnings per share by approximately $.26. For the quarter, the return on average assets totaled .73% and the return on average equity was 7.8%. At quarter end, the ratio of tangible common equity to total assets was 8.2%.
