(St. Louis, MO, May 6, 2004) --- Anita Hockett was awarded the 2004 Community Service Award sponsored by Commerce Bank at a luncheon held on Friday, April 30 at Whitmoor Country Club. A grant of $7,500 funded by the William T. Kemper and Commerce Bancshares foundations was given in Ms. Hockett's name to the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.
Jack Schreiber, President and Chief Operating Officer, Commerce Bank, presented the service award and grant, saying, "Anita exemplifies the community spirit we are seeking when making this award. Her dedication to providing medical care to low-income and uninsured residents in St. Charles and Lincoln County makes her an ideal choice."
Anita began her career as a registered nurse in 1954 in Iowa City, Iowa. After moving to St. Charles with her family, Anita joined the staff of SSM St. Joseph Health Center. During her 28-year tenure with St. Joseph's she served as a pediatric nurse, Nurse Manager in Pediatrics and Orthopedics and as the Nursing Administration Quality and Risk Management Coordinator.
After her retirement from St. Joseph's in 1995, Anita desired to put her medical skills to use in the community on a volunteer basis. She joined the staff of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in St. Charles as the Clinical Director. Volunteers in Medicine is a national network of free clinics that emphasize the use of retired medical professionals and volunteers to care for the "working uninsured" so that everyone in the community has access to healthcare. Over 2,200 patients received health services from the St. Charles clinic during 2003.
The Commerce Bank Community Service Award is dedicated to recognizing individuals who make an exceptional contribution to their community and the people who live there. A special grant given in the name of the honoree is awarded to the nonprofit agency of the honoree's choice. The potential award recipients are identified through a thoughtful consultation process with groups that include community and civic leaders. Commerce Bank officers and advisory board members then select the Community Service Award recipient.
