JOE HARTMAN RETIRES AS COMMUNITY PRESIDENT OF COMMERCE BANK, MONITEAU COUNTY, BRAD CLAY NAMED REPLACEMENT

Tipton, MO - November 10, 2004 - Joe Hartman will retire from his position as community president of Commerce Bank, Moniteau County, at year-end. Hartman will continue to serve as an integral member of the Commerce Bank, Central Missouri Region Advisory Board of Directors. Additionally, he will work with newly appointed community president, Brad Clay, to ensure a smooth transition for customers and employees.

Clay brings eight years of business and financial services experience to his new position in Moniteau County. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's of science degree in financial management, he has served in both consumer and commercial positions during his tenure with Commerce. Clay most recently served as business banking relationship manager at the bank's Columbia regional headquarters. Active in civic and charitable initiatives, Clay has served as Board Member, Columbia Jaycees; and Speakers Bureau Co-Chair, The United Way.

Clay and his wife, Lori, will re-locate to Tipton with their 10-month old daughter, Ellie.

Clay commented on his promotion, "Joe Hartman is an outstanding banker and community leader and I am honored to follow in his foot steps. As Commerce Bank's community president, I will work to ensure we continue to deliver the highest level of quality banking services in Tipton and California."

Hartman's tenure in banking began when he joined Tipton Farmers Bank in June 1958. Commerce Bancshares, Inc., purchased the bank in June 1970. Hartman served both banks in several key positions, working in a variety of departments including bookkeeping, personnel, teller, consumer lending, commercial and real estate lending. His promotion to community president of the Tipton bank was in 1986.

Hartman graduated from Tipton High School in 1957. He attended Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo. from 1957-1958. He attended the American Bankers Association Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis. from1974-1976. He served his country in the United States Army from 1961-1963.

Active in the community, Hartman has served as a board member of the following organizations, Tipton Betterment, Inc., Tipton Opportunity, Inc. Citizens for Education, Tipton High School Advisory Board, Price James Library Board and St. Andrew's Church and School Board.

Hartman has two grown children Joe J. Hartman, Olathe, Ks. and Lynn Brown, St. Charles, Mo. He also has five grandchildren.

Commerce Bank will host an open house from 9 am - 2 pm, Friday, December 10th. The public is invited to attend to welcome Brad Clay and congratulate Joe Hartman.
