Commerce Bancshares earns No. 1 ranking in
Bank Director’s RankingBanking study
St. Louis, MO – Commerce Bancshares ranked first overall in Bank Director’s annual RankingBanking study, an analysis of the nation’s largest 300 publicly traded banks based on profitability, capital adequacy and asset quality data. This marks Commerce’s fifth appearance in the study and its first time earning the No. 1 ranking, reflecting the company’s long track record of strong performance across changing economic environments.
RankingBanking, sponsored by Crowe LLP and analyzed by Piper Sandler & Co., used year-end 2025 data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. Banks were evaluated on core return on average assets, core return on average equity, tangible common equity to tangible assets, and nonperforming assets to loans and other real estate owned. These combined scores determined the overall rankings, with Commerce earning the highest overall score among all evaluated banks.
“Being recognized as the top-performing bank in the country by Bank Director is a tremendous honor,” said John Kemper, president and chief executive officer, Commerce Bank. “This distinction reflects the disciplined, long-term approach that has guided Commerce for more than 160 years and most importantly, our team members’ unwavering commitment to our customers, communities and shareholders."
