How does check fraud happen?
There are many ways that check fraud can occur. For instance, a check could be stolen out of the mail and altered to change the payee and/or amount. Or a fraudster may create counterfeit checks using account and routing number information from a stolen (but previously legitimate) check.
If Commerce Bank systematically identifies potential suspicious activity with a check you wrote, we will notify you with a Short Message Service (SMS) text to the mobile phone number you have on file with us. The text message will come from the number 28234. The Commerce Bank systems will not catch every instance of potential check fraud; that's why it's important for you to remain vigilant in monitoring your account activity.
