When writing a check, you shouldn’t have to worry about check fraud. Commerce Bank is proud to offer text Alerts to assist in notifying you if the Bank detects potential suspicious activity on one of your checks. Although reviewing your monthly statements in a timely manner is always the first line of defense against fraud, Commerce Bank hopes this service will aid in all of our efforts to prevent check fraud.

If you receive this notification, please log in to Online Banking, or the Commerce Bank Mobile App and find the check number referenced to review the image. Verify whether it is a check you wrote and make sure that the amount and payee have not been altered. Or you may call the Bank’s Check Fraud staff at (833) 554-0252.


Check Fraud FAQs

Commerce Check Fraud Alerts are triggered at the time a suspicious check is identified on your checking account.
The Commerce Check Fraud Alert will be sent to the mobile phone number you have provided to the bank for the primary checking account owner. Only one text Alert will be sent to one phone number on an account per suspicious check event.
Commerce Check Fraud Alerts will be sent soon after a potentially suspicious check drawn on your account is identified.
No, you do not need to enroll if you have provided the Bank with a mobile phone number to keep on file.
Any personal checking customer with a mobile phone number on file is eligible. Currently, business, and commercial customers are not eligible for check fraud text Alerts.
When Commerce Bank systems detect that a Commerce Check being processed appears to be modified or altered.
“Free MSG: Commerce Bank Fraud Alert: Please review Check#XXXXXXXXXXX for $XXXXXXXXXXX Acct*XXXX. Reply YES=valid/NO=invalid/STOP to opt out or Call 833-554-0252”
  1. Review the check image using Online Banking or the Commerce Bank Mobile App.
  2. Then, reply Yes to indicate the check is valid, or reply No, to indicate the check is not valid.

If you do not have Online Banking or our mobile app, you can call the Bank’s Check Fraud staff at (833) 554-0252 or visit your local Commerce Bank Branch as soon as you receive a text Alert about a suspicious check.

If the allocated time frame expires, the check will be handled in a manual process, and you may receive a phone call for confirmation.
The check will be processed in the normal manner.
The check in question will be returned the customer will receive the following message:

“Free MSG: Commerce Bank Check Fraud Alert: Thanks for your reply. Please call us at 833-554-0252 for next step. Reply STOP to opt out.”
Yes, since the check in question recently posted to the account, the check image is available in Online Banking or Mobile Banking under Posted Transactions.
You could receive a phone call related to a suspicious check. If you would prefer to receive a text Alert, please ensure your mobile phone number is on file with Commerce.
  1. You can provide your mobile phone number in Online Banking
  2. Our Mobile App
  3. Going to “My Profile” under “Customer Service” and updating your Contact Information.

You can also provide a mobile number at any branch or by contacting the Bank’s Check Fraud staff at (833) 554-0252.

To change your mobile phone number:
  1. Log in to Online Banking
  2. Go to “View and Manager Alerts” under “Customer Service”
  3. Click the edit icon next to your primary mobile number and follow the instructions.

If you do not have Online Banking, you can activate a new account.

To stop receiving check fraud Alerts, text “STOP” to the Commerce Bank short code 28234 or reply “STOP” when you receive an Alert.
Your mobile phone service provider may be blocking the use of “short codes” on your mobile phone even though it is enabled to receive text messages. Please contact your service provider to make sure they are not blocking short codes.
No, Commerce Bank does not charge a fee for check fraud Alerts.
