Text for Check Fraud

When writing a check, you shouldn’t have to worry about check fraud. Commerce Bank is proud to offer text Alerts to assist in notifying you if the Bank detects potential suspicious activity on one of your checks. Although reviewing your monthly statements in a timely manner is always the first line of defense against fraud, Commerce Bank hopes this service will aid in our efforts to respond to check fraud.

If you receive this notification, please log in to Online Banking or the Commerce Bank Mobile App and find the check number referenced to review the image. Verify whether it is a check you wrote and make sure that the amount and payee have not been altered. Or you may call us at 800-453-2265.

 

Check Fraud FAQs

Commerce Check Fraud Alerts are triggered when a suspicious check is identified on your checking account.
Commerce Check Fraud Alerts will be sent to the mobile phone number you have provided to Commerce Bank for the primary checking account owner. Only one text Alert will be sent to the phone number on an account per suspicious check event.
No, you do not need to enroll if you have provided Commerce Bank with a mobile phone number to keep on file.
Any personal checking customer with a mobile phone number on file is eligible. Business and commercial customers are not eligible for Commerce Check Fraud Alerts.
An Alert will be sent when Commerce Bank systems detect that a Commerce Bank check being processed appears to be modified or altered.

The Alert will come from the number 28234 and will read:

"Free MSG: Commerce Bank Fraud Alert: Please review Check#XXXXXXXXXXX for $XXXXXXXXXXX Acct*XXXX. Reply YES=valid/NO=invalid/STOP to opt out or Call 833-554-0252”

If you don’t respond within 30 minutes, we may attempt to call you. Or you can call the Check Fraud department team at 833-554-0252.

  1. Review the check image using Online Banking or the Commerce Bank Mobile App.
  2. Then, reply “Yes” to indicate the check is valid, or reply “No” to indicate the check is not valid.

If you do not have Online Banking or our mobile app, you can call Commerce Bank Check Fraud at 833-554-0252 or visit your local Commerce Bank Branch as soon as you receive a text Alert about a suspicious check. We have a limited time to return the check, so please respond as soon as possible.

The check will be processed in the normal manner.
The check will be returned to the bank that accepted it for deposit, and you will receive the following message:

“Free MSG: Commerce Bank Check Fraud Alert: Thanks for your reply. Please call us at 833-554-0252 for next step. Reply STOP to opt out.”
Yes. Since the check in question recently posted to the account, the check image is available through Online Banking or in our mobile app. You can find it under "Posted Transactions."

You could receive a phone call related to a suspicious check. If you would prefer to receive a text Alert, please ensure your mobile phone number is on file with Commerce Bank.

You can check your information in Online Banking or through the Commerce Bank Mobile App. Go to "My Profile" under "Customer Service" and view your "Contact Information."

You can also provide a mobile number at any branch or by contacting us at 800-453-2265.

To change your mobile phone number:
  1. Log in to Online Banking
  2. Go to “View and Manager Alerts” under “Customer Service.”
  3. Click the edit icon next to your primary mobile number and follow the instructions.

If you do not have Online Banking, you can activate your account.

To stop receiving check fraud Alerts, text “STOP” to the Commerce Bank short code 28234 or reply “STOP” when you receive an Alert.
Your mobile phone service provider may be blocking the use of short codes on your mobile phone even though it is enabled to receive text messages. Please contact your service provider to make sure they are not blocking short codes.
No. Commerce Bank does not charge a fee for Commerce Check Fraud Alerts. Message and data usage fees may apply; check with your wireless or VoIP provider for more information.
