Key Features Parents and Kids Both Love

Their Own Debit Card

Each child gets their own debit card, up to 5 children per household. It works anywhere Mastercard is accepted, and your kids can only spend what you’ve loaded on their card.

Parental Controls That Actually Control

Parents can set spending limits by category, approve or block merchants, cap ATM withdrawals and turn the card off in one tap. It’s the freedom kids want and the guardrails you need in real-time.

Allowance and Chores on Autopilot

Never forget allowance day ever again. You can schedule it once and it lands on their card automatically. Also, you can tie payouts to chore completions, so the trash actually goes out.

Savings Goals Kids Can Watch Grow

Kids can set a savings goal in the app and get closer to that new phone or must-have item. Greenlight Select families earn the 2% Greenlight Savings Reward on an average daily savings balance, up to $5,000 per family.

Financial Literacy, Built In

With Greenlight Level Up™, kids learn important financial basics with interactive games and videos. It looks like they are just playing games, but the tool actually helps them build lifelong money habits.

Safety and Security Parents Need

Funds are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 through Greenlight’s partner bank, the card carries Mastercard Zero Liability Protection and unsafe spending categories are automatically blocked.

Unsafe spending categories automatically include spending at locations where minor spending is restricted, such as casinos.

The Right Account at Every Age

As your child builds financial confidence, you should be at a bank that is built for every experience. From elementary school to the world beyond, Commerce will grow with your family each year. Plenty of families have different accounts at once — Greenlight for a younger sibling, teen checking for the one with a job.

Here's the path your family can follow:

  • Ages [Under 13]: Greenlight® debit card (freefootnote * with qualifying accounts) — Chore and allowance automation, category-level spending controls and financial literacy games. An early introduction before a real bank account.
  • Ages [13–17]: Teen Checking — A joint checking account for teens and parents: their own debit card, direct deposit, mobile check deposit and the mobile banking tools they'll use for life.
  • 18+: Commerce FREE Checking — A seamless step into adult banking, with the account history and habits already in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best debit card for a kid should pair strong parental controls (spending limits, real-time alerts, instant card lock) with genuine money lessons: chores, savings goals, and financial literacy tools. Greenlight checks every box, which is why Commerce Bank and Greenlight have teamed up. For Commerce customers, it's also freefootnote *, which puts it ahead of nearly every alternative on cost alone.
Yes. Most kids' debit cards charge a monthly service fee, but Commerce customers get fees associated with Greenlight waived when they connect an eligible Commerce checking account as the preferred funding source, covering debit cards for up to five kids under one account.
$0 monthly feefootnote * for Commerce customers with a connected preferred funding source. No monthly maintenance feefootnote * minimum initial loading and reloading.footnote ^
When debit cards are funded and controlled by a parent, there are no minimum ages for debit cards, since issuance is tied to the account owner who is over the age of 18. Most families find the sweet spot for a first debit card is ages 9 to 12. Kids in this age range are old enough for an allowance, chores and real spending decisions Greenlight gives you the ability to control each limit. For younger kids, start tight with low limits and loosen as they grow.
The Greenlight card is a prepaid card attached to a parent-managed app, not a bank account in the child's name. You load money from your own checking account, set the controls and see every transaction in real time. Kids can only spend what's loaded, so there's no debt risk and no overdraft fees. Funds on the Greenlight card are FDIC-insured through its issuing bank, Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC, and Greenlight itself is a financial technology company, not a bank.
Greenlight doesn't charge ATM fees, though ATM operators may add their own surcharges; you can restrict your child’s ATM access entirely from the app. The card declines when the balance runs out, so overdraft fees can't happen. Additionally, it works internationally in most countries with no foreign transaction fees.
Usually the early teen years, once they've built habits with a card like Greenlight and are earning their own money. That's the moment to step up to a Commerce Teen Checking account - a true joint bank account with their own debit card, direct deposit for first jobs and mobile check deposit.
